Doctor Who

For all of those readers out there who browse my blog, from college students to grumpy seniors, who don't know about the wonder that is Doctor Who, please just stop everything you are doing at this very moment and find the nearest Netflix account to watch it on!

Hell, you can borrow mine. It's the same account I use for movies and shows, to avoid cleaning my place or studying for classes. :P

Anyhow, this show is actually the longest-running and most successful science fiction series of all time, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. It's not surprising to see why, either -- it's really something to behold. The show was really ahead of its time, but now that we are approaching 50 years of the Doctor, capabilities have met up with potential!

If you're new to the show, or a seasoned TARDIS rider, take a look at these excellent, high definition wallpapers with a Doctor Who theme, and maybe you might even find one you like as much as the show itself -- though, I doubt it. ;]

College & University Campus (for Students!)

As I am sure all of my readers are well-aware, I am a student at a city college hoping for a transfer to study at a university. While I am studying away for my classes, I often find myself on my laptop to research information, to write essays or papers, and to goof off a bit when my mind has been on just one topic for too long!

So, I figure that my laptop should be learning and education friendly while I'm using it at the school, to keep me on track for studying (or, at least, as long as I can stay on track in a cramped city college library!). That brings me to the focus of today's post: college and university campus / logo wallpapers (for students!):

Tech Tuesday: Steampunk

I think Wikipedia can more accurately describe this than I, a simple and lowly college student, can, so here's an excerpt from their page on Steampunk:

"Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction characterized by a setting in which steam power predominates as the energy source for industrial technologies,[1] inspired by industrial civilization during the 19th century.

Typically, therefore, works of steampunk are set in an alternate history of the 19th century's British Victorian era or American "Wild West"; in a post-apocalyptic future during which steam power has regained mainstream usage; or in a fantasy world that similarly employs steam power.

Steampunk perhaps most recognizably features anachronistic technologies or retro-futuristic inventions as people in the 19th century might have envisioned them, and is likewise rooted in this era's perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, and art. Such technology may include fictional machines like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne."

Gundam!

For those of you who are already aware of what Gundam is (probably college-student nerds much like myself, I suspect), just skip the following description and go straight to the high definition Gundam wallpapers below.

For those of you who are unaware of what Gundam is exactly, read the rest of this post for a brief summary of the book, television, and film series (hint: it has a ton of giant, flying robots in it!) from Wikipedia:

"The Gundam Series (ガンダムシリーズ Gandamu Shirīzu?) is a metaseries of anime created by Sunrise studios that features giant robots (or "mecha") called "Mobile Suits" (MS); usually the protagonist's MS will carry the name Gundam.

The metaseries started on April 7, 1979, as a serial TV show called Mobile Suit Gundam. That first TV series has since spawned a franchise that has come to include works released in numerous media.

Titles have appeared in the form of multiple television series and OVAs, movies, manga, novels and video games, among other modes. The story from the original 1979 series has been considerably extended with sequels, prequels, side stories and alternate timelines.

As a result, the title Gundam has become a collective term for the seven distinct but related timelines that can be pieced together from the stories that appear in the Gundam franchise. Generally speaking, the timelines do not intersect, but they do contain a few common elements such as the titular war machines called Gundam.

However, all Gundam timelines and worlds, long after their own anime series, do eventually intersect and combine in the series Turn A Gundam."

Back to School Wallpapers (College/University Edition)

As August draws to a close, and September lurks just around the corner, college/university students all around the country (and quite possibly the world) are getting ready for new, fall-semester classes. Since I'm sure there's plenty of students who are excited to start classes or get back into campus life, it seems like a good idea to put up some back to school wallpapers.

Unfortunately, it's actually quite a bit harder to find back to school wallpapers than I thought. Cursory searches showed very little that I could actually use! :O So, while we are one short of my usual 5 minimum high definition wallpapers today, I think we'll be able to manage, right? :P

Check out the wallpapers below!

Wednesday Music - School of Rock

Many movie-goers will remember the movie that came out a considerable time ago by the name of School of Rock, starring Jack Black as a comical, totally-not-serious teacher that fills in for a teacher during his/her absence (frankly, I can't remember). After realizing they're a total bore, he whips out the instruments and molds them into rock 'n roll prodigies.

I'm sure the movie made a decent amount of money, and it was an all-around enjoyable movie (which isn't too hard with the lovable Jack Black). Watch it, enjoy it, and if you really liked it that much, then use one of these School of Rock high definition wallpapers!

Skyrim - Winterhold Mage's College

For those of you who are unaware (and not a part of the gaming community at all, if you are indeed unaware), Skyrim is the fifth installment to the huge Elder Scrolls fantasy game series, one of Bethesda's famous non-linear open-world RPGs (click here for my previous post with a Skyrim wallpaper).

The following high definition wallpapers are of the school for those who wish to learn magic, the Mage's College in Winterhold. You can talk to a few people here, students and teacher alike, who will let you in on some secrets of all types of spellcasting (for gold, of course).

Harry Potter - Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

Fans of the Harry Potter series can definitely appreciate today's theme, which is the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. There's even some house-specific wallpapers for your desktop, to show your House colors and mascot with pride (though pride is more for Gryffindors; I'm a Ravenclaw).

For non-fans of the book series, the Hogwarts school is a school for magical children in the Harry Potter book series, written by J.K. Rowling in the U.K. She has made a massive fortune thanks to the series and its merchandise, including 8 full-length, huge-release films, almost all of which have broken records.

Though, if by this time you haven't read the Harry Potter series, you've been missing out on so much.

United States of America (USA)

My apologies to the foreigners that visit my blog, because today's post is all about the home country of this college kid: the United States of America. The country that fought for its independence from colonial English expansion well over two centuries ago stays strong even today, and this post celebrates that.

These high definition wallpapers will satisfy even the pickiest patriotic students of desktops and backgrounds, so dig in and enjoy if you're looking for a little red, white, and blue to adorn your computer screen. Go crazy with some patriotic spirit!
